A friend of mine who also teaches 5th grade in England, has been using Google Apps in his classroom. Now it is my turn. Here’s the link to his blog: http://tbarrett.edublogs.org/ Of course all of his students have laptops, but we’ll make due with our 3 little computers and 30 minutes a week in the computer lab
I am think about the students writing a weekly? / bi-weekly? / monthly? newspaper using Google Docs. I may also let the students write the weekly newsletter. Google Docs will allow them to collaborate and work on the same Word Document from home, school, etc. all at the same time without having to wait their turn. They can divide up sections and work on on their own time.
We will also use it for other things as well, such as writing collaborative papers – especially collaborating with students from other schools – Wood county schools or school from other states or countries.
Hi Kevin and Room 23 – great to see you engaging with Google Apps as a tool for your class. I hope some of the lessons I have learned will help you define the way you will use it. Good luck with it all and let me know how the children react to working with it next term. best wishes
