Homework

This is normally where daily homework assignments will appear. If you are going to be in my class next year, here are your first homework assignments. Please answer by replying below.

1. Read. Read. Read. In my class we won’t be using the reading text book much. Why? Because all research indicates that to become a better reader, you must read rich, quality, books. Not parts of them. So, each student will read a book a week. The good news is YOU get to choose the book. There’s more to it than that which I will explain in detail next year, but for now … get used to reading every day.

2. Some math games:

3. Complete the problem below without using the traditional division algorithm and without using a calculator. In other words, solve it without dividing.

Problem: There are 23 students in Mr. Mace’s and he had 257 colored pencils that he didn’t want or need. He wanted to give them to the students, and he wanted to be fair and make sure everyone got an equal amount of pencils. How many colored pencils would each student get?

How did you solve it?
How do you know you are correct?
Were there leftover colored pencils? If so, what did you do with them?
Remember … you can’t divide or use a calculator. You can draw a picture, use straws, multiply, etc.

3. Solve this problem in your head. No paper, pencil, calculator, manipulatives, etc. Just your brain.

78 x 15

Explain how you solved it (Don’t worry if you can’t. You will be able to by the end of September).

*I teach math a little differently because I usually make you tell me HOW you solved a problem. I emphasize understanding and being able to communicate your understanding to me and to others rather than only correctness.
